Brent Laabs a.k.a. labster is the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Wikitide Foundation, which operates the platform running this very website. He currently is a global sysop (who fight spam and assist stewards), administrator of the Miraheze Discord, and security reviewer for SRE (mostly reviewing extensions).
About Me
I live in Southern California, and work as a software developer. Despite this, I have very little involvement on the technical side of Miraheze, because I'm happy to leave that to sysadmins (and I kinda suck at ops). I have been sucked into the Miraheze org and occasionally still do for security reviews of new extensions.
My nickname is a result of my ninth grade biology teacher mispronouncing the name of the animal we were dissecting in a way that resembled my real name. I have a bachelor's degree in atmospheric science, and even went to a Ph.D. program in that field before dropping out.
If you really want to know more about me, just search my name on DuckDuckGo -- so far as I know, it's globally unique, and everything is about me.
My wikis
- I am a cofounder of All The Tropes, a wiki about projects and pattersn in entertainment.
- I created the data set, forking from TV Tropes and converting from PmWiki, which was also used to create Tropedia on Fandom
- I'm a writer on My Apartment Manager is not an Isekai Character, a megacrossover fanfiction.
- The very first wiki that I was involved with was Davis Wiki, about my college town. I started editing wikis on November 14, 2004.
My software
Besides contributing to various other module and projects, I've written two relatively simple extensions all on my own:
- mw:Extension:Highlight Links in Category - add a CSS class to links in any category (some cool use cases)
- mw:Extension:HideSection - toggle showing sections, like in Minerva, but in other skins.
Once upon a time, I contributed a small amount to the Rakudo complier, back when the Raku language was still called Perl 6.
History at Miraheze/WikiTide

☐ Don't show me this tip again.
I joined up when I wanted an ad-free hosting service for All The Tropes, back when there was just a small wiki farm called Orain. Orain disappeared in mysterious circumstances, and some of the volunteers opened a new farm, and helpfully preserved our wiki on this Miraheze place.
Six months later, I ended up legally owning Miraheze, to keep things going after a health incident by the founder. I used the title of Chief Financial Officer, handling finances, while most of the day-to-day operation of Miraheze was handled by the sysadmins and stewards.
As we were always intended to be a nonprofit, I happily handed over ownership of the project to Miraheze Limited. But after a few years, they announced their intention to quit, so I ended up stepping in to save the Miraheze a second time — the end result being a reverse-fork with WikiTide, which now operates these wikis. I now serve as WikiTide's Chair of the Board, which is not the President — I just run the meetings.

- This account used to be named Vorticity, but it was renamed long ago. Every once in a while you may see a reference.
Other Userpages
- The one on All The Tropes is the probably the most interesting.
- The one on Mediawiki.org is less so.
